At Eyes in Motion we carry over 100 different  types of contact lenses, these lenses are also available in a variety of sizes.  Choosing the correct lens for your eyes requires the patience and dedication of a skilled contact lens fitter.

Contact lenses can be broken down into three main categories: materials, replacement schedules and whether or not you can sleep in them.

Materials

Contact lenses are made of many different types of plastic, but they are divided into two main groups: soft or rigid gas permeable (RGP). Rigid gas permeable contact lenses take longer to adapt to, but are more durable and more resistant to deposit buildup. They tend to be less expensive over the life of the lens (but the upfront cost is higher) and can offer some people crisper vision than they would have with soft contacts.

Soft contacts contain from 25% to 79% water, are easy to adapt to and are quite comfortable. Demand for healthier lenses has led manufacturers to recently develop a new generation of soft contact lenses made from silicone hydrogel material that allow around six times more oxygen to reach the eye compared to ordinary soft lenses.

Replacement Schedules

The replacement schedule of a contact lens refers to how long you can safely wear it before you need to throw it away. With RGPs, you generally replace them every several years; because they're so hardy, it doesn't make sense to replace them more often. Soft contact lenses come in a wider variety of replacement schedules:

Typical Replacement Schedules for Soft Contact Lenses
Type of Contact Lens Replace it Every...
Daily day
Monthly month
Bi-Weekly 2 weeks

Sleeping in Your Lenses

The lenses that you can sleep in are extended wear or continuous wear. The term "continuous wear" is reserved for contact lenses that can be worn continuously without removal for life of the lens which is usually either 1 week or 1 month depending on the lens and provided you stay out of the swimming pool. These "continuous wear" lenses are made from new super-permeable silicone hydrogel materials.
